EU fails to impose tough sanctions on Russia

July 23, 2014

The European Union failed to agree Tuesday on tough new sanctions on Russia over its alleged help for Ukraine separatists accused of shooting down Malaysian Airlines Flight 17. It opted instead for milder penalties on Russian officials. Foreign ministers disagreed over how strongly to respond to the tragedy, which claimed the lives of all 298 abroad the Amsterdam-to-Kuala Lumpur flight.

The 28-nation EU agreed to impose visa bans and asset freezes on more Russian officials, on top of penalties imposed over Russia’s seizure of Crimea from Ukraine and support for Ukrainian rebels along its border, Dutch Foreign Minister Frans Timmermans said. He did not say how many officials were targeted or reveal their names.
