BOGOTA, Colombia – Foreign Minister Frank Walter Steinmeier visited the South American country on Friday (13 January) to further Germany’s support for the peace process. During his visit, he opened the German-Colombian Peace Institute. In his speech at the event, Steinmeier said: “With this peace agreement, Colombia is sending a message to other virtually irresolvable conflicts. And this message is that peace is possible!”
He also held political talks with his Colombian counterpart María Ángela Holguín and President Juan Manuel Santos. Also, Steinmeier travelled to the conflict zone. In one of the 26 special zones where thousands of FARC fighters are currently due to gather to lay down their arms, he had a chance to see the implementation of the peace agreement at first hand.
