Hungary govt to call referendum on mandatory migrant quotas
February 25, 2016
The Hungarian government has decided to call a referendum on the EU’s mandatory quotas on migrants, Reuters reported. Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Wednesday the migrant quotas would redraw the ethnic, cultural and religious map of Hungary and Europe. “The government is responding to public sentiment now, we think that introducing resettlement quotas for migrants without the backing of the people equals an abuse of power” Orban told reporters. His right-wing government has consistently rejected the migrant quotas. It is not clear when the referendum will be held.
