Iran ‘fills Arak nuclear reactor core with concrete’

January 12, 2016

The core of Iran’s heavy water reactor in Arak has been removed and filled with cement, Iranian Fars News reported, citing their own sources. Modifying the reactor was one of the conditions Tehran had to fulfill in accordance with the agreement reached on its nuclear program in Vienna.

If the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirms Iran’s full compliance in its final report, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini are expected to issue a joint statement attesting that Tehran has met the deal’s requirements. Under these circumstances, the process of lifting the sanctions from Iran could be launched.
