Israel appoints interior minister who spent 2 yrs in jail for corruption

The Israeli cabinet has appointed Aryeh Deri from the ultra-Orthodox Shas party as new interior minister instead of Silvan Shalom, who resigned last month. Deri served as interior minister from 1988 to 1993, but quit after a corruption scandal. In 2000, he was sentenced to three years in prison for taking $155,000 in bribes while in office. His sentence was reduced by a year for good behavior. More about
