NATO Council – extraordinary meeting at Turkish request
July 27, 2015
The North Atlantic Council (which consists of ambassadors from all 28 NATO alliance members) will meet on Tuesday after a Turkish request to carry out consultations concerning operations against Islamic State and the PKK Kurdish militants. The move was made possible by Article 4 of the Washington Treaty which says “any Ally can request consultations whenever, in the opinion of any of them, their territorial integrity, political independence or security is threatened”. Earlier this week Turkey carried out several airstrikes against the Islamic State and Kurdish militants in Iraq and Syria. The move was a Turkish response to a suicide attack in the southeastern Turkish city of Suruc which killed more than 30 peopleand, and several attacks against security forces allegedly perpetrated by the Kurds.
