Norway increases the defense expenditures

June 2, 2016

Norway’s PM Erna Solberg says her administration will continue multi-year boosting of military spending and preparedness as part of NATO’s requirement for the members to increase defense expenditures. “My government will continue to invest in security. This is the third consecutive year that we have increased the defense budget and we will continue to do so” said Erna Solberg on Friday during an address before the Washington-based think tank, the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Norwegian Armed Forces will buy for its Air Force Navy an important number of M1 Abrams The Leopard 2A4 tank which is seen as a rival of the Russian military T-90 tank. The Leopard 2A4 most widespread version of the Leopard 2 family, the 2A4 models included more substantial changes, including an automated fire and explosion suppression system, an all-digital fire control system able to handle new ammunition types, and improved turret with flat titanium/tungsten armour. Norway’s current conservative government has authorized also the purchase of 22 US-built F-35 joint strike fighter aircraft, including the nuclear capable F-35A.

Notice: After 2000, Germany and the Netherlands found themselves with large stocks of tanks they had no need for after the Cold War. These tanks were sold to NATO or friendly armies around the world. Among these were Austria, who received 114 vehicles, Canada (107), Chile (140), Denmark (51), Finland (139), Greece (183), Norway (52), Poland (128), Portugal (37), Singapore (96), Spain (108), Sweden (160), and Turkey (354) were among the buyers of the surplus tanks.[31]
