August 6, 2013
A court in Turkey has jailed former senior military figures and opposition MPs among 275 defendants alleged to be part of a plot to overthrow the government of prime minister Tayyip Erdogan.
Retired military chief of staff General Ilker Basbug was sentenced to life for his role in the conspiracy in which prosecutors say a network of secular nationalists, code-named Ergenekon, pursued extra-judicial killings and bombings in order to trigger a military coup.
