South Africa, world mourn Nelson Mandela’s death, celebrate his legacy

South Africans woke on Friday with with deep sadness at the loss Nelson Mandela as tributes continued to pour in from U.S. leaders and ordinary citizens around the world for a man considered by many to be the father of the nation.
The former South African president, Nobel Peace Prize winner and anti-apartheid leader died Thursday at the age of 95. President Jacob Zuma, said Mandela, known affectionately by his clan name “Madiba” had died “peacefully” at around 8:50 p.m. while in the company of his family.
In Washington, President Obama called him one of the “most influential, courageous and profoundly good” people to ever have lived. “He achieved more than could be expected of any man” an emotional Obama said, in remarks from the White House, adding: “He belongs to the ages.”
